Independence movement led by Mahatma Gandhi
Gandhi exhorted Indians to acquire a spinning wheel and to spin and weave their own clothes and fabrics, according to traditional techniques. This initiative, known as khadi, is part of the independence movement led by Gandhi. It provided additional work to people in rural areas who lived primarily off agriculture.
