An exhibition in Roma : "the currency of united Italy, from lira to euro"

Banca d’Italia is organising, from 5 April to 3 July 2011, an exhibition on « The currency of united Italy: from lira to euro » as part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Italian unification in 1861 with the creation of the Kingdom of Italy.

The numerous currencies previously used were replaced by the lira. This changeover was both a way of symbolizing the political integration of the country and of strengthening its economic development. All of these objectives also underpinned the creation of the euro. The exhibition features multimedia displays, unique documents and collections of rare coins and ancient banknotes.
