On 18 May, over 3,000 museums across Europe and 1,300 in France stayed open late into the night for the 9th edition of European Museum Night. Visitors were given the chance to (re)explore their favourite venue, free of charge, mixing culture with a night-time atmosphere of partying and mystery.

Below are a few of the economic-themed events that took place during the 2013 Museum Night:

The exhibition "All you need to know about economics", organised in partnership with the Cité de l’Économie, stayed open until midnight, like the rest of the Cité des sciences et de l’industrie.

Two of the Cité de l’Économie’s other partners joined in the night-time fun on 18 May:

The BNF or French National Library, in conjunction with the Musée d’Orsay, the Petit Palais and the Lille and Lyon Museums of Fine Arts, organised a presentation on French coins and medal production at the end of the 19th century. (19h-00h)

The Monnaie de Paris and the Louvre got together to reenact Pistoletto’s 1966 Walking Sculpture.

Here are a selection of events held in other major European cities:

In London, in addition to its permanent exhibition, the Bank of England Museum organized a series of activities around the theme of English banknotes. And of course, visitors were given the chance to hold a real gold bar.

In Tallinn, the Bank of Estonia museum also opened late on 18 May: visitors got the chance to meet the central bank governor as well as other key executives.

In Lisbon, the Bank of Portugal museum offered visitors the chance to see part of the renovation work currently underway.

In Kremnica, the National Bank of Slovakia museum also joined in European Museum Night.

In Belgrade, the National Bank of Serbia organised a series of original activities and visits on the theme of banknotes and counterfeiting.

The museums of the central banks of Belgium and Germany both opened late in March and April as part of the Brussels and Frankfurt editions of Museum Night. The events mixed together the themes of finance and the economy with music and cooking.

In Vienna, the museum of the National Bank of Austria also took part in Austria’s Museum Night, which is held in October.
