Creation of the Paris Club

Informal group of creditor countries charged with restructuring the debt of heavily indebted countries. This forum was set up in 1956 when Argentina agreed to meet its public creditors in Paris. The Paris Club deals with public debt, i.e. government debt and private sector debt guaranteed by the public sector. Today, 19 creditor countries are permanent members of the group.
