This indicator measures the number of mobile phone subscriptions in each country. Taking all countries together, the number of subscriptions increased more than 600-fold in the space of 24 years, reaching just under 7 billion in 2014. Whereas the Americas accounted for over 50% of mobile phone subscriptions in 1990, their share shrank considerably in favour of Asia, which in 2014 accounted for 60% of subscriptions. Africa also recorded very strong growth in the number of mobile phone subscriptions between 1990 and 2014: it increased by an average factor of 1.8 each year over this period.
