This indicator shows population developments in each country between 1960 and 2014 according to United Nations data. In the space of 55 years, the total population has more than doubled to stand at just over 7.2 billion people.
Africa saw the strongest demographic growth, with a trebling of its population. The population of the Americas, Asia and Oceania more than doubled over this period. In 2014, 6 out of 10 people lived in Asia, mainly in China and India.
Six out of 10 people live in Asia; China, India and the United States are the most populous countries in the world.   Find out more
