The second ‘Académie de Paris’ economics and social sciences forum will take place at the Pierre Gilles de Gennes college on 22 January 2013. This is a key annual event intended to raise students’ awareness of the economy and surrounding issues.

It provides an opportunity for classes from around 15 different schools to take part in conferences and round table discussions chaired by university academics.

The college students play an active role in the event, having prepared for the day in advance under the guidance of their economics and social sciences teachers. Using resources available on the forum’s website in particular, they prepare questions for the speakers, and, after the forum, they study in greater depth some of the issues that the speakers have tackled.

The forum’s theme this year will be “Talking about trade”. The afternoon will begin with a conference on the theme of the market chaired by Pierre-Noël Giraud, an economics professor from the Ecoles des Mines, in which he will draw specifically on examples from the commodities market. There will then be a round table discussion on “Contrasting viewpoints on trade” with contributions from Francis Kramarz, economics professor at Ecole Polytechnique and director of CREST, sociologist Lucien Karpik, a professor at Ecole des Mines, and Alain Caillé, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the Paris-Ouest-Nanterre La Défense university and founder of the Mauss review.

The Cité de l’Économie et de la Monnaie is a partner of the economic and social sciences forum
